looking after a rose

2018 Performance

"If they ask me what I've done these past years; I admired the beauty of a throned rose and hung onto it as I tried to keep it alive." — Leman Sevda Darıcıoğlu

looking after a rose takes place 24 hours a day for a moon cycle, 28 days, in a room of 7 square meters covered with soil, planted little rose trees. The room is separated from the audience by a filtered glass panel through which the audience sees the room and Leman sees their own reflection. The audience is allowed to enter the room one by one when Leman leaves the door open. During the performance, Leman cuts a rose every sunrise, spends the whole day staring at the rose, and at every sunset, they give themselves a "time cut" and hang the rose on the wall.

They live in the 7 square meters for 28 days without getting out, without speaking.

Realized in the year following bomb explosions in Turkey, the work addresses the collective feelings of pessimism and helplessness under the political regime. With this performance, Leman embarks on their ongoing research on collective exhaustion and totalitarianism.

Overhead view of twenty-eight small rectangular wooden boxes arranged in rows on the floor. Each contains a dried rose or fragments of stems, leaves and petals in a separate compartment, forming a repeated grid of preserved plant remains.
