Contour

2017 Performance

Contour is a collective question on the kinship between life, death, risk, intimacy, and vulnerability, addressing the relation between me and the other, existence and presence; a question about being / existing, being marked, and being in relation to the other.

The performance starts with Leman Sevda Darıcıoğlu standing against an empty white wall, surrounded by steel nails covering the floor. To bang the first nail onto the wall and start drawing the contour, they hold a nail next to their body and hold a hammer out to the audience. During two hours, the audience is invited to pound the nails onto the wall, drawing the outline of Leman's body, while they stand still.

By inviting the audience to draw the contour of their body, Leman creates a collective intimate space. The performance brings together the relation we have with the other, the time intrinsic to the performance, and death inherent to life.
